Anal toys are for everyone, whatever your gender or anatomy, but they come with a few safety rules that matter more than for any other category. Follow these and you are off to a good start.
Rule 1: Always choose a flared base
Any toy used anally must have a flared base or a handle wider than the toy itself. Unlike the vagina, the rectum does not end; muscles can draw an object inward. A flared base keeps the toy where it belongs. Never use an object that was not designed for anal play.
Rule 2: Lube is not optional
The anus does not produce its own lubrication. Use a generous amount of lubricant and reapply as needed. A thicker water-based lube works with every toy material. Silicone-based lube lasts longer but should not be used with silicone toys.
Rule 3: Start small and go slowly
Choose a slim toy with a tapered tip for a first experience. Relaxation is key: take your time, breathe deeply, and stop if anything hurts. Discomfort is a signal to slow down; sharp pain is a signal to stop.
Choosing a first toy
Butt plugs
A plug has a tapered tip, a wider middle, a narrow neck and a flared base, so it stays comfortably in place. Trainer sets with three sizes let you progress gradually.
Anal beads
A series of graduated beads on a flexible stem, with a ring or handle at the end. Beginners should start with small beads that are joined on one solid silicone piece.
Prostate massagers
Curved toys designed to reach the prostate, a sensitive gland a few inches inside on the front wall. Many have a perineum arm for external stimulation too.

Materials
Choose non-porous materials: silicone, glass or stainless steel. They can be cleaned completely, which matters especially for anal toys. Read more in our materials guide.
Hygiene
- Wash the toy before and after every use with warm water and mild soap.
- Never move a toy from anal to vaginal use without washing it thoroughly first, or use a fresh condom over the toy.
- Trim fingernails and remove rings if you are using your hands too.
